Living Memory: Exploring the NYSCA Memory Archive
June 18 2022 • 11:00 AM
New York Public Library for the Performing Arts -Bruno Walter AuditoriumThis event took place in person at the Library for the Performing Arts.
The NYSCA Memory Archive is a mixed media collection of materials drawn from a range of organizations and individuals dedicated to sustaining independent media arts throughout New York State. The collection represents over fifty years of invaluable support from the New York State Council on the Arts. Dedicated to furthering the artistic growth and public engagement in the media arts, the NYSCA Electronic Media and Film Program oversaw the development of the archive. Originally under Film & Television, this department grew from the early 1960s to become a leading state agency program in the development of film, analog, and digital media as an art form. The archive itself is comprised of four collections held by different agencies: the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts; the Rose Goldsen Archive at Cornell University; the New York State Archives in Albany; and the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, NY.
On Saturday, June 18, the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center hosted a free daytime event dedicated to introducing this collection. Representatives of the holding agencies provided an overview of their collections and demonstrated how to locate and access their holdings. In addition, works by media artists who have benefited from NYSCA support were shown.

NYS Arts Standards for Youth Media Symposium
October 17 2019 • 9:30 AM
Film at Lincoln Center - Elinor Bunin Munroe Film CenterOn October 17th, Media Arts Education professionals from 23 organizations throughout New York State gathered at Lincoln Center's Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center for the first New York State Arts Standards for Youth Media Symposium. Attendees kicked off the day with a deep dive into the Media Arts Standards with Magic Box Productions Executive Director and Standards Writer Nelle Stokes. Attendees discovered new and unique ways of thinking about the ways that the standards can frame their media arts practice in the classroom.
In the afternoon, teach-back presentations by The Art Effect, DreamYard, and Jacob Burns Film Center shared best practices from across the state. The Art Effect's Mary Ellen Iatropoulus and David Wong brought Radio Uprising to the group in a hands on lesson and discussion around the definitions and differences of radio versus audio. DreamYard's Hillary Kolos walked the group through Digital Learning Portfolios, a platform co-designed with Parsons to help high schoolers in the pre-college process. Jacob Burns Film Center Educators Darrel Swann and Brandan Shenkman introduced View Now Do Now: an online resource of simple prompts inspired by classic films to guide classroom discussions and activities.
Rounding out the day was a panel discussion moderated by Karen Helmerson of New York State Council on the Arts with industry greats– Roddy Schrock, Executive Director with EyeBeam, Susanna Pollack, President with Games for Change, and Tali Hinkis with LoVid. Each presented briefly on their organization and how it works with students and aligns with the Standards to make a difference in education. Following a robust panel discussion and Q&A, attendees celebrated at a wine and cheese reception hosted by Magic Box Production's Board of Directors.
Co-sponsored by Magic Box and the NYSCA Electronic Media & Film and Arts Education Programs, the symposium was supported through funds from the NYSCA Electronic Media & Film in Partnership with Wave Farm: Media Arts Assistance Fund, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
