The Gertrude Stein Repertory Theatre (GSRT) was founded in 1990 to promote and support innovation in the performing arts, with a comprehensive mission: to create new genres of live theatre that merge the best of traditional theater techniques from around the world with the latest in multimedia performance tools; to "build" an Internet-based world stage to enable traditional theater artists, educators and students around the globe to collaborate in real and virtual time and space; to create arts programming that emphasizes international collaborations and multi-site events for projects and special events for students at university and professional levels; and to build new audiences in the U.S. and increase their appreciation for the depth and breadth of world theater.
