The New York Documentary Center was founded in 1997 to provide the public with programs exploring documentary filmmaking, past, present, and future with the express purpose of broadening the audience base for the documentary genre. The goals of the Center are: To gather documentary filmmakers, industry professionals, educators, students and the general public to view and discuss distinctive non-fiction films and videos; to explore traditions in documentary filmmaking as well as new approaches; breakthroughs in low-budget production; interesting developments in commercial non-fiction television; and innovations in technology; to spotlight notable international works, past and present, that have had limited or no distribution in New York City; to present panel discussions with film and videomakers, distributors, exhibitors, critics, and television executives, which will place in context the works shown and lead to greater understanding and appreciation of the documentary form.
