Mission StatementFounded as a not-for-profit organization by artists in 1977, Harvestworks has helped a generation of artists create new works using technology. Our mission is to support the creation and presentation of art works achieved through the use of new and evolving technologies. Our goals are to create an environment where artists can make work inspired and achieved by electronic media; to create a responsive public context for the appreciation of new work by presenting and disseminating the finished works; to advance the art community's and the public's "agenda" for the use of technology in art; and to bring together innovative practitioners from all branches of the arts collaborating in the use of electronic media. We assist with commissions and residencies, production services, education and information programs, and the presentation and distribution of their work. |
DescriptionHarvestworks programs include PASS, the Production Access StudioS, featuring surround sound digital audio recording and editing, digital video editing and programming for interactive sound and visual performance. The Educational Program offers training in all of the above areas. The Artist-in-Residence program annually commissions artists to work with our engineers and technicians to create new digital media artwork in our facility. The Artist’s Guide! is the Internet database of composers and visual artists accompanied with samples of their works and biographical information. The Listen In presentation series of concerts, lectures, exhibitions and conferences give the public an opportunity to learn how innovative artists integrate digital media and other advanced technology into the their work. Commissioned Works/Special Projects is a program offering financial and administrative assistance to individual artists. We act as a fiscal agent for those artists applying for grants from federal and state programs and private foundations. Through this program we help develop collaborative projects between artists and assist with the presentation of their work. |

Grants and Commissions Offered Van Lier Fellowship Program
Eligibility: Applicants should be young artists under 32 years old, working in digital media and the electronic arts, whose work would benefit from significant time in Harvestworks' studios and from expert engineering assistance. Applicants must reside in New York City.
The fellowships are open to young, post-graduate New York-based artists from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the electronic arts. The one-year residencies help advance Van Lier fellows’ professional development and promote diversity, equity and access in the arts. Van Lier Fellowships are made possible with the generous support of the New York Community Trust’s Edward and Sally Van Lier Fund
The $10,000 fellowships include a $6000 stipend to cover career development activities, travel and living expenses while in residence. In addition to the stipend, the artists receives access to training, studio space and production facilities at Harvestworks. Van Lier fellows take advantage of Harvestworks’ broad-based education program to acquire new skills and work with our staff of engineers, artists and multimedia designers in creating new compositions. Once completed, the compositions, or digital media works, will be performed as part of Harvestworks’ Listen In concert series and included in our on-line catalogue, and may be included in one of our festival programs. |
