Mission Statement

Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) strives to enrich the quality of life throughout Brooklyn by fostering, encouraging and promoting the arts through service and support to artists and arts organizations.

Founded in 1966, BAC is the umbrella for Brooklyn’s range of cultural groups and individual artists working in the visual, performing, media and literary arts. The Council helps Brooklyn’s artist population—from the experimental and cutting edge to those preserving and evolving traditions of cultural heritage—create and present their work, and ensures that over 250,000 people throughout Brooklyn have access to a variety of free arts programs each year.

In the firm belief that culture contributes to the health of the community, BAC takes a leadership role in creating an environment conducive to the arts by providing grants, resources, referrals, networking opportunities, seminars, performances, screenings, exhibitions and other activities that support and encourage the arts. Together, these efforts ensure that Brooklyn’s ever-expanding cultural community remains a strong and vital part of the borough’s social and economic fabric.

Description

Arts in Education
BAC makes arts and culture a part of learning by bringing the excitement of the creative process into schools, senior centers and community facilities in all five boroughs. Teaching artists conduct lively workshops in the visual arts, theater, video, music, dance, books arts, museum studies, computer arts and multi-cultural programs in grades pre-K through 12. BAC also offers performances and assemblies for students, staff development workshops for teachers, and parent involvement sessions.

BAC Gallery
Brooklyn Arts Council's new gallery space, located in the heart of the vibrant DUMBO arts scene, is a premiere destination for emerging Brooklyn artists to display their work and for collectors worldwide seeking up and coming talent in the visual arts.

Community Arts Regrant Program
The BAC Community Arts Regrant program awards grants for projects of all artistic disciplines, including music, dance, literature, humanities, visual arts, media, photography, multi-discipline, folk arts, opera/music and theater. Funds are provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and JPMorgan Chase.

Folk Arts
Brooklyn is rich in living heritage, with an impressive range of folk artists. Music, dance, visual and material arts, occupational and religious traditions all find wider audiences through our public presentations, from the annual Folk Feet traditional dance showcase to Circle ‘Round Brooklyn social dance workshops to the Brooklyn Maqam Arab Music Festival.

Film Programs
Scene: Brooklyn, BAC's new film program, continues the Council's 43 year tradition of supporting independent filmmakers and presenting free media arts programming to the public. Formally the Brooklyn Arts Council International Film Festival, Scene: Brooklyn features screenings of films by and about our borough and its residents; professional development services, like our annual screenwriting workshop; and lecture/discussions with industry professionals and prominent filmmakers. Another component of BAC's film programming is the Woman of African Descent Film Festival, which is presented in partnership with the Brooklyn Chapter of the Links.

BAC/Independence Professional Development Seminars
Through the BAC/Independence Professional Development Seminars for the Arts, artists and arts administrators gain the expertise they need to improve and refine their professional practices. These informative free seminars are presented throughout the year.
