Mission StatementTo encourage cooperation among and advancement of poets, performers, writers, producers, publishers and other engaged in artistic activities; to develop and produce works by emerging poets and performers for performance on stage, television, film and other media; to conduct tours and hold exhibitions; to promote the study, improvement and advancement of the arts; and to conduct any and all lawful activities which may be useful in accomplishing the foregoing purposes. |
DescriptionBAS supports programs in poetry, performance, music, folk arts, theater, and unique collaborations with local organizations such as the Youth Poetry in NYC series. We work with Washington Square Films on our poetry videos, films and digital anthologies. We do multilingual programming; educational programming; we are a major participant in the Peoples Poetry Gathering and support bilingual publishing efforts. This is the second year we have held a six-week program in West African Oral Traditions featuring the Gambian griot Papa Susso (and supported by NYSCA Folk Lore). ). In addition, in collaboration with the Open Center, we have continued to develop the certificate program (non-accredited) in applied poetics, Study Abroad on the Bowery. In it's second year, the course now offers public programs and discourse in conjunction with the City University of New York's Graduate Center which attract renowned poets, playwrights and fiction writers from around the globe. |
