Mission StatementBig Orbit Gallery is an artist run arts center dedicated to transcultural, multidisciplinary explorations of contemporary art issues, with its primary focus being the promotion of the art and artists of western New York. Through programming that ranges from painting to performance art, architectural installations to live sound sculpture, Big Orbit extends the legacy of artistic innovation historically associated with Buffalo, thereby providing a basis for the creation of new boundary pushing work. The gallery encourages under-represented, emerging and established artists in the community through solo exhibition opportunities, SOUNDLAB performances, and curated group exhibits promoting social awareness. By embracing many artistic disciplines, including visual arts, performance arts and media arts, Big Orbit assists in establishing a creative dialogue between artists and community while raising awareness of the arts developing in western New York. |
DescriptionBig Orbit Gallery's two main programs are its Visual Arts Program and Big Orbit SOUNDLAB. The gallery's visual arts program presents 6 exhibitions and one 10-12 week site specific residency per year providing emerging artists an opportunity to advance their careers and established artists an environment in which to explore new bodies of work. SOUNDLAB intends to provide a forum for emerging non-visual artists in developing genres as well as established artists exploring new forms in a performance format while continuing the gallery's mission of launching a new era of local engagement with the global avant-garde. Presenting upwards of 50 performances ranging from experimental music and sound art to theatrical performances and literary events to media programs and installations, SOUNDLAB feeds on Big Orbit's reputation for high professional standards and artistic excellence, expands Big Orbit's scope, constituencies, and recognition, and reaches patrons of all artistic disciplines. |
