Mission StatementAmerican Documentary, Inc. (AmDoc) is a New York City-based non-profit media organization dedicated to creating, identifying and presenting contemporary stories that express opinions and perspectives rarely featured in mainstream media outlets. Since 1988, AmDoc has produced the award-winning P.O.V. ('point-of-view') series for PBS, presenting over 230 of the most compelling documentaries about contemporary life. With a mandate to leverage independent non-fiction media in the public interest, AmDoc is a catalyst for public culture; developing collaborative strategic engagement activities around socially relevant content on television, on line and in community settings. These activities are designed to trigger action; from dialogue and feedback, to educational opportunities and community participation. |
DescriptionAmerican Documentary, Inc., (AmDoc) was established to provide a venue for presenting the work of visionary independent filmmakers in the non-fiction genre. AmDoc's signature series, P.O.V. ("point of view") combines provocative, real-life storytelling with innovative models that experiment with the role that media arts can play in public life. This award-winning PBS series premiered in 1988 and quickly became a haven for independent producers. Since that time, the series has consistently brought diverse, often marginalized perspectives to the general public. Through its media lab projects, P.O.V. also explores ways to maximize the artists' work as a springboard to fostering public dialogue and civic engagement at the national, regional, and community levels. The series regularly showcases the work of both emerging and accomplished NY-based filmmakers. |
