Mission StatementFounded in 1990, AFF’s mission is to promote knowledge and understanding of African culture through the moving image; increase the distribution of African media in the United States to reach broad, diverse audiences; enhance opportunities and visibility for African media artists, and facilitate dialogue between African filmmakers and their international counterparts. In this way, AFF seeks to counter incomplete, distorted perceptions of African people and their culture through the voices and viewpoints of Africans themselves. |
DescriptionSince 1993, AFF has undertaken the following programming: an annual film festival in New York City that reaches thousands of attendees; an annual traveling series of films that goes to sites that otherwise do not have access or expertise to present African cinema; curatorial services to partner organizations internationally to enable them to bring African cinema to their constituencies. In addition, AFF has created programs to reach local communities in New York City, including a high school education program, outdoor screenings in city parks, and activities in collaboration with numerous other cultural institutions. These cultural institutions include the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Museum of Art, Museum for African Art, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Columbia University, New York University, City College, and UNDP. Internationally, AFF has collaborated with The Bob Marley Foundation in Jamaica, the Johannesburg Biennale Film Programme, the Pan African Film Festival in Brazil, and the Syndey African Film Festival in Australia. |
